An Overview of the Response to the Highland Park, Illinois 2022 Independence Day Mass Casualty Shooting Incident (Law Enforcement Only)

During the 2022 Independence Day Parade in Highland Park, a gunman opened fire on the crowd. Seven people were killed, and forty-nine were injured. On-scene officers immediately worked to locate the suspect and treat the wounded. When it became clear that the suspect was no longer on scene, efforts transitioned to a multiagency response that included an investigation, search, and crime scene management. The 1,800 federal, state, county, and local public safety personnel who participated in the incident and subsequent investigation worked quickly and cohesively to identify a suspect who was arrested approximately six hours after the initial incident. Participants will be presented with the key takeaways from the initial response to this critical incident, as well as important staff considerations.
