In the current environment, an officer needs to be cognizant of an individual’s privacy, civil rights, and civil liberties from the moment a call for service is initiated until the situation comes to an end. It is extremely important that officers always be aware of their surroundings, not only for their safety, but to protect the safety, privacy, civil rights, and civil liberties of all individuals in the area—including the possible offenders, witnesses, or spectators. Interacting with the public is the foundation to law enforcement.
