Research has shown that during their careers, police officers experience chronic exposure to stress and trauma. The strain associated with stress and trauma is often a factor in police misconduct, excessive force, domestic violence, and suicide. While there has been increased awareness of the impact of stress in policing, solutions to this problem are challenging. Roca worked in partnership with Massachusetts General Hospital and several police agencies to develop a training program designed to help officers manage stress and trauma. The program, Rewire4, teaches officers strategies based on cognitive behavior theory (CBT) to help develop mental resilience. This panel explores implementation in the Boston and Baltimore police departments and provides results of an ongoing program evaluation.
