Detective Lieutenant Michael Skowyra is the Special Operations Commander for the Kingston, Massachusetts Police Department. Prior to KPD, Mike served in the U.S. Army, including a combat deployment to Iraq. While with KPD, he has held positions including patrol, detective, prosecutor, firearms instructor, outreach officer, field training coordinator, patrol procedures instructor, PIO, and other specialized and supervisory assignments. Over the last 11+ years, Mike leads the department in arrests yet also advocates for alternative remedies to possession level drug violations. He has played an active role as an outreach officer for Plymouth County Outreach (PCO) since the program’s inception and continues to work with PCO’s leadership team to highlight the importance of a post-overdose outreach program and alternative remedies, such as diversion, to address these issues. This work has resulted in relationships with community partners including other police departments, hospitals, outreach organizations, district attorney's office, sheriff's office, health departments, non-profits and other stakeholders to effectively battle the opioid crisis.
