President
Citizens Crime Commission of New York City
New York City, New York, United States
Richard Aborn began his career as a violent crime and homicide prosecutor in the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. Mr. Aborn established one of the first multi-agency strike forces to investigate and prosecute illegal gun running. Realizing that arrest and prosecution were insufficient to stem illegal gun violence and that national legislation was required, Mr Aborn left his government position to help build and then ran what is now called the Brady Center.
At the Brady Center he was one of the leaders behind the successful effort to pass the national Brady Bill, national ban on assault weapons and the national ban on large capacity magazines.
As president of the NY Crime Commission, Mr Aborn has led efforts to utilize DNA evidence, worked with law enforcement agencies to imporve the seizure and prosecution of illegal guns, developed multiple interventions against youth, gang and gun violence and extremism and stresses the use of technology to leverage interventions against violence.
Mr. Aborn has worked throughout the United States, Latin America, the United Kingdom and India on issues related to public safety, the prevention of violence and Rule of Law issues.
