Deputy Commissioner Michael A. Bonse oversees the Office of Public Safety for the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services. Before joining DCJS, Michael served 25 years with the City of Kingston Police Department, where he retired as the Deputy Chief. He held numerous key leadership positions, including regional police academy director, master instructor, SWAT team commander, agency accreditation program manager, state accreditation assessor, and Gun-Involved Violence Elimination project manager.
Michael is dedicated to improving police professionalism, enhancing executive-level police leadership, and promoting evidenced-based policing strategies to improve public safety and community trust. He serves as a member of the IACP Police Professional Standards, Ethics, and Image Committee.
Michael is a proud graduate of the FBI National Academy and the IACP Leadership in Police Organizations. He earned his B.S. in Organizational Leadership and M.P.A. at Marist College. He served as a Fellow at Hudson Valley Patterns for Progress, working with community stakeholders in addressing the impact of institutional racism on community and police relations.
