Chief Sonstegard began his career in 1990 as an intern with the Ventura County (CA) Sheriff’s Office. In 1993, he was hired by the LAUSD Police Department & served the students and residents of the Boyle Heights neighborhood in East Los Angeles. He joined the Oxnard (CA) Police Department in 1996, where he held assignments including Field Training Officer, K-9 handler, FBI Task Force Sergeant, Training Sergeant, Professional Standards & Special Operations Commander, & Assistant Chief overseeing all three (3) Department Bureaus. His contributions included developing & instructing the Department’s nationally recognized Cultural Proficiency curriculum, developing the county’s first “Summer at City Hall” program, leading the Department transition to a jiu-jitsu based defensive tactics program, and the implementation of the county’s first “Community Camera” program.
In 2022, Chief Sonstegard accepted the position of Chief of Police for the City of Edgewater (CO) where he currently serves. He is a proud graduate of FBINA Session #246 and holds a B.S. degree from California Lutheran University and a Master’s degree from California State University, Northridge.
