Major Ian Whittington is a member of the command staff of the Colorado State Patrol (CSP). He administers field operations in District 3, Northeastern Colorado. Major Whittington has served as a state trooper for more than 20 years. To start his career, Whittington worked for several years as a patrol trooper. Whittington promoted to sergeant in 2008 and served in that rank for more than 10 years. As a sergeant, Whittington supervised a team of technical accident investigators in the Denver area for several years, prior to transferring to CSP Headquarters to serve as CSP’s first CALEA Accreditation Manager. As Accreditation Manager, Whittington led CSP’s project to achieve initial advanced law enforcement accreditation; law enforcement re-accreditation; initial public safety communications accreditation; and initial training academy accreditation. Whittington’s service as CSP’s Accreditation Manager culminated in CSP receiving CALEA’s “TRI-ARC” award in 2018. During his tenure leading CSP’s accreditation program, Whittington was also an active member of the Rocky Mountain Accreditation Network (RMAN), serving as Vice President and President of this multi-state organization. Major Whittington served as a CALEA Assessor from 2016 to 2023. Since promoting to the rank of captain in 2019 and major in 2023, Whittington's primary responsibility has been saving lives through highway safety. For this work, he received the Colorado State Patrol’s Meritorious Service Award in 2021, and the Colorado Department of Public Safety’s Engagement Award in 2022. Major Whittington has received formal law enforcement leadership training through FBI-LEEDA and through the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP). Prior to starting his law enforcement career, Major Whittington graduated with honors from Boston University.
