Shawn Butler began his law enforcement career with the Auburn, NY Police Department and served for 25 years, retiring as the Chief of Police in 2021.
Throughout his career, he has participated in numerous programs and services, including serving on the Domestic Violence Coalition, Supervised Visitation/Safe Exchange Consulting Committee, and the local Child Advocacy Center MDT.
Chief Butler continued his law enforcement career when he joined the Catawba Indian Nation located in Rock Hill, SC where he was hired as the Nation’s Executive Director of Public Safety / Tribal Chief of Police. Chief Butler has been charged with developing and implementing the Nations first Public Safety Division and Tribal Police Department. Chief Butler is passionately working to deliver upon the Tribe’s vision of a restorative justice model that will uniquely serve their people while adhering to culturally appropriate practices.
Chief Butler has a Bachelor of Arts from the State University of New York at Oswego, a Master of Science in Law Enforcement and Public Safety Leadership from the University of San Diego and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, Session #274.
