Battle Creek (MI) Police Department
Stephen Bush is a Deputy Chief for the Battle Creek Police Department in Battle Creek, Michigan. His 29 year career in Law Enforcement is vast ranging from Patrol Officer to Command of Investigations. He is a graduate from Northwestern University’s Staff and Command, Class of 2006. In 2019 he earned a bachelor’s degree from Siena Heights University. His innovative approach to problem solving helped him create BCPD’s Gang Suppression Unit and Community Fusion Center. Stephen’s focus on meaningful relationships with community members and stakeholders is credited for the successful reduction of gang related violent crime and increased cooperation amongst community service organizations. With relationship cultivation at the forefront, Stephen changed BCPD’s approach to homicide investigations. In 2019, BCPD introduced a grant funded Victim Advocate into the Investigations Team. Due to the change in investigative techniques and our new victim-centric approach, BCPD has seen a 90% homicide clearance rate over the last 5 years. Recognizing the importance of the Victim Advocate, The City of Battle Creek added the Victim Services Unit into the annual budget in 2023.
