Bryan Edelen is a Major with the Louisville Metro Police Department where he serves as the Commander of the Performance Division. In this role, he oversees performance improvement and reform efforts within the LMPD. These efforts prioritize Employee Wellness, Audits and Compliance in addition to Research and Development, the Performance Review Board, and Inspections and Compliance.
The Performance Division recently led an 18-month project that was centered around public/private collaboration to make LMPD a more desirable place to work and show its employees they are supported by the vast majority of the great city they serve. This eventually led to the grand opening of The Summit Wellness Center on October 17, 2023. The Summit Wellness Center is a 3-story, nearly 30,000sq. foot building that houses the LMPD Wellness Unit which prioritizes the "5 Pillars of Wellness." The Summit features a fully furnished fitness area, café, lounge, leadership library, meditation room, conference room, mental health resources, basketball/pickle ball court, a physical therapy rehabilitation studio, classroom/fitness studio, and first aid station.
Major Edelen is also the Public Safety Partnership (PSP) coordinator for LMPD and serves as the President of the LMPD Commanding Officers Association.
Prior positions include: Special Victims Unit (SVU) Commander, Hostage Negotiation Team (HNT) Commander, Deputy Director of the Police Activities League (PAL), Executive Officer to the Chief, Patrol Division Lieutenant, Patrol Sergeant, Strategic Planning Sergeant, Budget Coordinator, Major Crimes detective, and patrol.
Major Edelen holds a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from the University of Louisville. He is a graduate of the Senior Management Institute for Police and the Southern Police Institute's Administrative Officers Course-Valedictorian.
Major Edelen is a second generation LMPD officer who proudly serves the city and police department he grew up in. He volunteers coaching inner-city youth basketball and with the non-profit Louisville Metro Police Foundation. He is married to his beautiful wife who is a school teacher, and has two amazing daughters.
