Dr. Zachary Gerdes is the Department Psychologist for the Washington State Patrol. He was a prior Captain in the United States Air Force. Prior to military service, Dr. Gerdes held various clinical, teaching, and research positions in Washington and Ohio. He has a PhD and master’s degree from the University of Akron and a bachelor’s degree from Seattle University. He was previously with the Veterans Affairs Health Care System in both research and clinical roles, first at VA Puget Sound in Seattle and then at the Cleveland VA in Ohio. He taught at the University of Akron, Northeast Ohio Medical University, and Cleveland State University. He created a reentry mentorship program for youth in juvenile detention in King County, Washington and previously served the Seattle Police Department through domestic violence response and victim advocacy work. He regularly publishes and presents research nationally. His book, Man Kind: Tools for Mental Health, Well-Being, and Modernizing Masculinity, was published in 2022 by Johns Hopkins University Press.
