Chief Thomas began his law enforcement career as a Public Safety cadet, shortly after graduating from high school. In 1989, Chief Thomas joined the Denver Police Department, continuing a family tradition of public service to the Denver community. Since then, Chief Thomas has held numerous assignments in Patrol, Investigations. Special Ops, and Admin, to include assignments as Commander of Police District 2, District 5, then Internal Affairs, followed by an appointment to Division Chief of Patrol and culminating with his appointment as Chief of Police. As a District Commander and D/C, Chief Thomas established a reputation as a collaborative leader, developing and sustaining lasting partnerships with neighborhood organizations, community leaders and other agencies. Additionally, as Commander of IA, Chief Thomas spearheaded the creation of the DPD Wellness and Resiliency Program. Chief Thomas graduated Summa Cum Laude from Columbia Southern University and has completed post-graduate study at The Naval Post-Graduate School, The FBI National Academy, Northwestern University Command College, and the Senior Management Institute for Police.
