Chief of Police
Norton Shores Police Department
Chief Marc VanderStelt is a life-long resident of West Michigan and a dedicated police officer for 21 years. He began his career in 2003 with the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety and transferred to the Norton Shores Police Department in 2004. In Norton Shores, he rose through the ranks and was appointed Chief of Police in October 2023. Marc earned a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and a Masters in Public Administration from Grand Valley State University. He is a graduate of Michigan State University School of Staff and Command, Class of 2018, but is way more of a U of M Fan (GO Blue!).
Chief VanderStelt assisted the Norton Shores Police Department in becoming one of the first agencies in Michigan to join the One Mind Campaign. Close collaboration with local behavioral health organizations includes an embedded clinician for the police department. This key role develops an alternative response to mental health calls, providing a crisis mobile response team. Chief believes that the multi-disciplinary approach yields more positive results for citizens in crisis.
