The patrol environment is unforgiving; the stakes in policing are high. There are countless ways things can go wrong and an endless number of ways to fail. Negative outcomes are costly. Deficits in patrol competence and errors on the job can be catastrophic. This presentation surveys the range of known negative outcomes in policing. The speaker will break down and isolate the root causes of failure and how prospective police officers’ abilities and skills can be tested and measured to analyze and forecast likely negative outcomes. The limitations of this process will be summarized to aid in the understanding and identification of barriers to proper utilization of non-medical/background screening and preemployment psychological testing/assessment in the larger employment screening endeavor.
