This presentation builds on a conversation held at IACP 2023 on the role of police in schools, which concluded that rather than asking if school resource officers (SROs) are effective or not, we need to be asking better questions, such as how does the amount and type of training officers receive play a role in SRO effectiveness? How might differences in SRO implementation matter for effectiveness? This panel will highlight new NIJ-funded research that digs deeply into how SROs are trained by National Association for School Resource Officers (NASRO). This panel will offer critical discussion and recommendations on best practices in implementing school policing programs from the perspective of both NASRO and the U.S. Department of Justice’s guidance on SROs published through the Office of Community Oriented Policing Srevices.
