Is My Cancer or Heart Disease Due to My Job?

This session will address the issues of causation and association of cancer and heart disease in law enforcement officers. We will present a review of the medical literature of these topics and the limitation of available data. We will address the principles to establish work relatedness (Bradford Hill Criteria, NIOSH criteria and ACOEM clinical practice guidelines on work relatedness), the difference between legal and scientific causation will be addressed. There will also be discussion of presumptive laws and how they might apply to the opinions of the provider. Finally, there will be some very practical advice on how to prepare a report is the provider is requested to provide one.
