Michelle Burrus, is a 16-year veteran of the New Castle County Division of Police and is currently a Sergeant in the patrol division. Michelle served in the United States Marine Corps from November 1998 until December 2002, attaining the rank of Sergeant.
In January 2009, while attending Wilmington University for her bachelor's degree, she was hired by the New Castle County Police Department. During her career, Michelle has held several positions within the department which includes, Patrol Officer, Community Engagement Specialist, Criminal Investigative Unit (Narcotics, Family Services, Crimes Against Children, Major Crimes, Homicide).
She is the recipient of multiple Commendation of Merits, Distinguished Unit Citation (2019), Kiwanis Police Officer of the 1st Quarter (2014), Kiwanis Police Officer of the year award (2014), Kiwanis Police Officer of the 3rd Quarter (2020), Kiwanis Police Officer of the year award (2020).
Michelle is also a certified police instructor, Team Leader of the Veterans Response Team (VRT), member of the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT), a member of the Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT), and a Police mentor.
