Chief Gregory G. Mullen served as Associate Vice President for Public Safety and Chief of Police at Clemson University from 2018 to September 2024. Previously, he was Chief of Police for the Charleston, SC Police Department from 2006 to August 2017.
Chief Mullen began his career in 1982 as a Special Agent with the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, then joined the Virginia Beach, VA Police Department in 1985, rising to Deputy Chief. He has a proven record of community involvement and team-based problem-solving, establishing strong community connections in Clemson and Charleston.
Throughout his career, Chief Mullen managed critical incidents such as Clemson’s COVID-19 response, the simultaneous trials of Dylann Roof and Michael Slager (2016), the Emanuel AME Church shooting (2015), and the Sofa Super Store Fire (2007).
He holds a bachelor’s degree in criminology from St. Leo College, a master’s in public administration from Old Dominion University, attended the FBI National Academy, PERF’s Senior Management Institute for Police, and holds an executive certificate in Public Leadership from Harvard’s Kennedy School.
