Sergeant Joseph King has been the Director of the Boston Police Peer Support/Family Assistance Unit and Critical Incident Stress Management Team since 2020 and a sworn BPD police officer since 1994. Prior to his service with the BPD, he worked as a corrections officer (Suffolk County - Boston MA) and deployed to Iraq and Saudi Arabia in the first Gulf War 1990 -1991 (US Army).
Sergeant King has worked various BPD assignments as a Police Officer, Detective & Federally deputized Task Force Officer (US Marshal’s Service and ATF). Said assignments included patrol work and investigations into: youth violence prevention, criminal street gang activity, fugitive apprehension, narcotics and firearms trafficking, homicides and officer involved shootings.
In 2005, Sgt.King became a member of the BPD CISM Team and has since conducted multiple CISM Debriefings, Defusings, Demobilizations and 1:1 peer sessions for a multitude of agencies over the span of hundreds of hours. Membership on the BPD CISM Team is not a full time position and is complimentary to an officer’s regular assignment. BPD CISM training is certified by the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation.
