Karen is a dedicated Mexican-American social worker with deep roots in central Utah, where she grew up. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Utah Valley University before pursuing a Master of Science in Social Work at Tulane University. Over the years, Karen has gained extensive experience working with non-profit organizations and local government agencies, specializing in support for immigrants, refugees, and responding to mental health crises.
Karen currently serves as the Social Work Director for the Salt Lake City Police Department's Community Connection and Crisis Intervention Teams. In this capacity, she oversees a team of 18 social workers and 4 law enforcement officers, working collaboratively to respond to crisis calls. These teams are dedicated to bridging service gaps and providing essential support to individuals in need. Outside of her professional responsibilities, Karen enjoys Southern cuisine, traveling, and as of today has been married for two full weeks.
