Chief of Police
City of Albuquerque, New Mexico
Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States
Police Chief Harold Medina, a native of Taos, N.M., has devoted 27 years to law enforcement, serving most of his career with the Albuquerque Police Department where he rose through the ranks to become the first Hispanic Chief in 15 years. After retiring as a Commander in 2014, Medina was hired as the chief of the Laguna Pueblo Police Department, an opportunity that provided him with a broader view of community policing and working with different cultures. Medina returned to Albuquerque in 2017 to serve as Deputy Chief of the Field Services Bureau. After three years, he took on the role as interim Chief of Police, and he was formally appointed as Chief of Police in March 2021. The City Council voted 8-0 to confirm him. Chief Medina has earned a reputation for aggressive fighting, while leading the culture change to embrace Constitutional policing. Chief Medina continues to build partnerships with other law enforcement agencies, as well as community organizations and disenfranchised populations that have historically viewed police with distrust.
