James M. Ferguson is the Special Agent in Charge (SAC) for the Boston Field Division and was promoted to this position in July of 2021. SAC Ferguson began his career with ATF in 2001 as a Special Agent in the Chicago Field Division. Serving in the Chicago II Firearm Trafficking Group, he ultimately led the Firearms Trafficking Task Force, which included the Chicago Police Department and the Illinois State Police. He became Group Supervisor of the Chicago Group II in 2012. In 2015, SAC Ferguson accepted a position as the Chief of the Firearms Operations Division (FOD). As the FOD Chief, he focused on ATF’s operations and policies, related to the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN), Firearms Trafficking, Crime Gun Intelligence, and the Frontline business accountability. In 2017, SAC Ferguson became the Group Supervisor of the Crime Gun Intelligence Center in Boston. He later became Boston Field Division’s Assistant Special Agent in Charge in January 2019.
SAC Ferguson began his federal career with the Department of State, Passport Office. SAC Ferguson earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Massachusetts Lowell.
